"Wow" is the first word that comes to mind when I think about this year's Fanime. I finally had the chance to recuperate from the convention with a good solid night's sleep last night. Monday I had to stay in Santa Cruz with a good friend because I missed the last train to SoCal, and ended up having to wake up at 4:45AM to catch the next one. @__@ Waking up that early after any convention is too much, but after a four day convention plus all the adventuring Faxen and I did before hand in San Francisco--dear me, that was just exhausting.

But I'm finally in SoCal, visiting with my family and old friends, and finally feel energized enough to do a recap of what was probably one of the best FanimeCons! It was as good as last year for me on a personal level, but so much better than last year's on a technical level. LineCon for pre-reg was completely gone, which everyone has been raving about, and with the convention center finally done with the remodel/extension, the convention center looks so beautiful! Plus, the Artist Alley was back in the convention center itself in the newly added ballroom and the Dealer's Hall was twice as big as years past because they ended up opening up what used to be the Artist Alley to extend the Dealer's Hall.

With all the changes and fixing up of last year's pre-reg system, Fanime has really taken it up a notch and I'm so relieved, given that it was Faxen's first CA convention and all I wanted was for it to go as smoothly as possible! I dropped Ariel for the sake of time, stress, and just so I could cosplay with Faxen all weekend since he'd come all the way from MA with me. There were very few hitches for brief moments like when we checked in with the hotel or when my alarm didn't go off and we accidentally overslept, but those were minor things and the convention was fantastic! From Day Zero to Day Four, we had the best time!

Day Zero was really just a nice relaxing day. We left San Francisco in the late afternoon. Once we got to San Jose, we checked in and then got out badges before I showed Faxen around the area that the con was held so he'd know his way around. Once that was done and I'd passed off the Tetra wig commission I'd done for a friend, I got to work on finishing up Michiru's uniform. I hadn't had the time to paint the plaid onto the skirt because the paints I'd been using back home decided to do weird things so I had to buy new paint. I finished up Michiru and then lace fronted Miria a bit more, but decided not to stress myself out over the perfect lace front since the wig was already pretty good on its own. Besides, I think taking a bubble bath was a much better use of my time than stressing over costumes. It was definitely the way to go and we somehow managed to get to bed at a reasonable hour.

Day One: Baccano!

For the first day of the convention itself, Faxen and I cosplayed Miria and Issac from Baccano! (which is a shining example of anime, and if you can handle lots of blood and gore, I highly recommend it). We got a pretty reasonable start in the day, especially given that the convention didn't really get into full swing until 2PM. My other friend arrived from Santa Cruz not long after we'd finished getting ready, and once we'd got their things in the room the three of us went out to the con.

It was, honestly, the best start to the convention. Faxen and I had barely been in the convention center for half an hour before someone came up to us to give us key chains of Isaac and Miria! It was so unexpected and so amazing. The entire day was fun and full of people being so excited over our costumes and us trying to be as in character as possible. Once we really figured out a rhythm it wasn't hard to maintain it when people asked for photos, and I think people really appreciated that so much.

The majority of the first day was pretty standard otherwise as far as cons go. Posing for photos, running into friends, looking around the Dealer's Hall and Artist Alley. The usual.

We had a photo shoot on the first day thanks to a friend who's always been nice enough to squeeze in some photos for me, and I cannot wait to get those back. (We had another shoot with another super amazing photographer on Sunday for our Baccano! costumes, and those are just amazing! I hope everyone can enjoy the photos once they are up!)

The best of course was taking purikura as Isaac and Miria. We were lucky to get the purikura in that night before a long line formed, but the next night wasn't so lucky and we had quite a tough time managing to get our purikura in for Haruka and Michiru but we did manage it in the end! We were just that determined!

By around nine or so we ended up back in our room, and because it had been such a long week already I called it a night by 10:30 while Faxen went out to explore.

Day Two: Sailor Moon

Day Two we debuted our school uniforms for Haruka and Michiru. These ended up being a big hit too! I wasn't expecting that, given that the sailor fuuku costumes are usually more popularly cosplayed, but people really enjoyed these costumes. We kept our eyes out for other Sailor Moon cosplayers, especially other Haruka and Michiru cosplayers. We also scoured the AA for all the HaruMichi art we could find. It was lots of fun to do that, and we found quite a bit of outer senshi love, though no enough to satisfy us! XD

We also tried to get in a few panels where we could, which is unusual for Faxen, since he's always in such high demand at conventions. We didn't go to a ton of them, but we got in enough over the course of the weekend.

We had another photoshoot with the first photographer Saturday (and then did our own shoot Monday for Haruka and Michiru which allowed us more time to get some of the more couple-y photos that we'd wanted).

The best part other than purikura and all the other Sailor Moon cosplayers and art, was taking a photo in front of the Fanime protester (which surprisingly this year, there were only two that I saw, and both on separate days on their own).

Saturday I managed to have a later night at the convention than the first since I was more rested. Once Faxen was ready for a break from his costume we wandered around a bit and went to some panels before calling it a night.

Day Three: Baccano! (Take 2!)

Sunday we accidentally overslept. Totally my phone's fault and I stand by that. But we didn't oversleep too much. And since we were just redoing our Baccano! costumes, it wasn't as though we were missing out on time wearing costumes we hadn't worn yet. It was a nice start to the day since we got to sleep a bit more, so we just took it slow. Went to a panel first thing after getting food, then wandered off to the convention center for more fun walking around, looking at art and in the dealer's hall, and meeting new people.

At one point, Faxen and I spent an hour and a half watching the most amazingly ridiculous Japanese show called The Hero Yoshiro (I think) and the Demon King. It was the most hilarious thing I've seen. I'm determined to find it and watch the entire series.

The best was when we met some of the steampunk Sailor Scouts! The Neptune was so sweet and all their costumes were just so amazing to see in person. I wish we could have seen the entire group. We had to rush off to dinner though, and we were already behind because I'd had to take photos of the wig commission I'd done in action. We went to the Thai restaurant in the area so I could get my much needed west coast Pad Thai which is just so much better than east coast Pad Thai.

After dinner Faxen changed and went off to explore, and my friend and I roamed the convention for a few hours before we ran into Faxen again and the three of us decided on taking purikura again. I mean, why the heck not, right?

Day Four: Sailor Moon

The end of the convention arrived too soon for me. Tired as I was, I just wanted it to continue. We got back into our school uniforms to finish out the convention as cute space lesbians. We did our photoshoot first, then grabbed food before heading back to the con for the last day.

Day four was filled with a ton of really nice artists offering us key chains or stickers of our characters, and making friends with them or else running into some of my west coast friends and saying our final goodbyes for the time being.

The very end of the con was a wonderful send off with a big group of people dancing at the front of the con center. We eventually had to call it a day though and said our goodbyes to Fanime, then Faxen and I parted ways so I could head to visit my family. There were a few issues with getting to SoCal Monday night, so I ended up arriving Tuesday, but regardless of the hitch, it was honestly worth staying at the convention as late as we did.

I miss Fanime so much and I'm more excited for next year's Fanime than I expected to be given all the concerns that had arisen after last year's convention. But they really turned it around, and I can only imagine that next Fanime will be even better!

Technically I'm not planning another convention for the year, but I may try for Boston ComicCon as Faith since James Marsters will be there; and if I can afford it, I'm hoping to go to AAC since that's always been such a fun convention. However, even if I don't go to anymore cons, I am still planning on some things with Faxen this summer, and I'd like to do photoshoots for certain things.

In the meantime, I'll be posting photos up as soon as I get them!
Hope everyone who went to Fanime had a great time!

Wow, it feels like it's been a while. Well, it kind of has. I never did get around to talking about PAXEast or the costume I wore for that convention! Well, I went as Princess Midna, but instead I did the concept design version featured in Hyrule Historia. There's a single photo up on my Tumblr for anyone interested in seeing how that turned out. PAX was a lot of fun, but I think if I go in the future, I'll be doing a more lowkey costume so I can actually play video games. Midna was a pain to move around in because of the headpieces, and I couldn't play video games that required headphones. But it was fun! Granted, I wasn't as happy with how Midna turned out as I'd have liked to be, but I did make the costume in a week and a half.

You may also notice, if you view my Tumblr, that I've added a donate button on my blog. Well, the reason for that is I'm very very broke. I finally got a new job--one that will give me hours so I can actually pay my bills--but unfortunately it's come very very late in the game. I'll be getting my first pay cheque today, but it's not going to be enough to cover bills and travel expenses. I'm not asking for anyone to fund my trip to CA/Fanime. That's been mostly paid for for months, minus the train ticket I need to go visit my family after the convention. I really just need help making ends meat so I can pay bills and eat. It's been an incredibly stressful month between finals, quitting my old (horrible) job, and transitioning to a new one all while trying to get ready for Fanime. It hasn't been easy. Finding this new job was a godsend, but there's no getting around that it came way later than I could afford. So, if anyone can help me out a bit, I'd really truly appreciate that. If I had other options, I wouldn't ask at all. I honestly hate this so much more than you could possibly know, but desperate times.

Anyway, with that out of the way, FANIME! I am excited, despite the stress piling up. Beyond excited. It's my home convention, I get to take my good friend Faxen, who has never been to Fanime before, and I get to show him all my old haunts from when I lived in SF and introduce him to some of my good friends! Plus, we've got some awesome costumes planned for the weekend! This convention means so much to me, and honestly, because of all this stress, I could not imagine not going. I'd miss seeing my friends, I'd miss seeing my family (especially my little brother), and I really just need a vacation from my life right now. So despite all that stress, there is so much excitement!

Now, usually I do a new CCS costume, but this year I've decided to drop it for several reasons, time being one of them, but the main being that my wonderful friend Demetyr, who has been my Clow Card for the last several years, isn't going. :( I'm very sad about that, but I understand why she can't make it. My other good friends aren't able to make it either, so I dropped River Song for this convention as well since I can't imagine doing that costume without my Clara.

So my lineup is now the following:

Miria (red dress) from Baccano! with Faxen
Michiru (school uniform) from Sailor Moon with Faxen
Ariel (fish tail) from The Little Mermaid (maybe with Glass-Rose-Prince)

We're not sure yet what days we're gonna be doing Baccano! and Sailor Moon, we will likely end up doing them twice though, and I think I'll be saving Ariel for Monday. The fish tail skirt for Ariel was actually my final project in my Creative Fashion class this semester, so I'm pretty excited about that!

We're in crunch time mode, for sure, since we leave on Wednesday morning. I imagine we'll be working on wigs in the hotel room Wednesday and Thursday night, but it will be done! This semester was pretty intense for both Faxen and myself, so it's no surprise that these costumes are cutting it close. But we're getting it done! I have tomorrow and Monday off from work to bust things out in time for Tuesday night when we will no longer be able to work on things because we'll be staying in a hotel the night before our flight since it's an early flight.

Thanks for all the support everyone, and sorry for having to bring my dire financial situation here. Like I said, desperate times.
Hope to see you all at Fanime!

Wow, that convention feels like it just went by at lightning speed. I'm almost positive yesterday was Friday, not Saturday. But here we are with animeBoston all wrapped up and the post-con blues starting to set in. It was a pretty great convention all around. Not perfect, but definitely a great con. I ended up doing only two of the costumes I had planned because I decided that I was not as happy with my CCS costume as I wanted to be and, more than anything, I just really enjoyed being Daenerys.

So, a quick recap:

Friday was the day we debuted our zombie hunter Sailor Scouts! Man, that was fun. Unfortunately, the majority of the group wasn't able to make it until about six in the evening due to school, but it was still awesome walking around with Venus and Saturn (and of course the head of Uranus). Overall people were able to recognize that we were zombie fighting Sailor Scouts, not just battle worn Scouts. The decapitated head of Uranus may have helped. And when Mars arrived, she was a zombie and I know that definitely added to the general zombie theme.

The head was a big hit. And by big hit, I mostly mean that everyone was really freaked out and thought it was especially tragic. Which means it was a success in my mind.

We had a quick photoshoot at around seven or so. Did some group shots and then we each got some solo shots done! We all got a sneak peek at the photos and they are SO good! Like damn. I'm very excited to get those back when we do. It'll be a couple weeks though for editing and such, of course. But they will be well worth the wait. And my group has plans to do another photoshoot for this particular cosplay, but as a location shoot instead of a con shoot which will be very exciting and give us the chance to be even more gory!

Once the shoot was done we were all pretty exhausted. We left the con around twelve I think, then once I got back to my place with my friends I finished up the final touches on Daeny. Unfortunately my purple contacts did not arrive on time, so I substituted blue ones.

Saturday was a pretty fantastic day for Daenerys, though there were some technical issues that frustrated me; mainly the lace front on my wig was pulling back. I'd rushed out of the house without thinking about spirit gum because prior to styling my wig I hadn't needed it, and so I totally spaced. By the end of the night my wig was pretty much falling off my head. It did hold up all day at least and I'm pretty sure I want a new Daeny wig. Granted, I still love the wig I have, but I want to do more versions of her so another wig will be good for more hairstyles.

I had a photo shoot Saturday night, but since the lighting wasn't super great we ended up only spending about thirty minutes on that and decided to do more shots in the morning today. The second photo shoot was phenomenal and I cannot wait to get those back--the first set as well, but that second set. I am so happy with how the costume turned out. While there are things I want to fix on it, it was overall a huge success! People had no trouble recognizing who I was despite it being an original design. Granted, having the dragon egg probably helped. XD

Still, I would say overall the convention was a success. I miss my friends so much now, though. Being so busy with school, work, and cosplays I haven't had any time to see them, so the post con blues are kicking in pretty early. But I don't have lots of time for that. I'm vegging out tonight and then tomorrow it's time to work on my cosplay for PAX East and a huge wig commission!

Well, that's about it! I hope everyone who went to aB had a fantastic time! Pictures will be coming shortly!

Looks like it's down to the wire and I still haven't posted my lineup for animeBoston this year! I haven't been to aB since 2012, and I'm so excited to be going with so many wonderful friends this year! This will be my third animeBoston and hopefully the best! Although, it may be hard to top 2011 what with getting to cosplay with my Gai-sensei all weekend that year. But regardless, I know this year will be great! I have three new costumes to debut (although the first isn't necessarily a new costume so much as a new take on an old one).

Friday: Zombie hunter Sailor Neptune
Saturday: original design for Daenerys Targaryen
Sunday: original for Cardcaptor Sakura

Friday is my only group cosplay, but we've got pretty much every scout and it's going to be amazing. Really gory and really bad ass. And I'm following up one bad ass cosplay with another by debuting Dany from A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones. I'm doing an original design, which the top portion of was my final project for my pattern drafting class last semester. I can't decide if I'm more excited for zombie hunters or being Khaleesi. Either way, I'm super pumped and I hope everyone really enjoys my costumes at this aB.

CCS will be a little break from bad assery. I was originally planning on doing this particular outfit for a Vday shoot, but it ended up not working out because of timing so I'm bringing it to aB. I managed to get it put together all with spare pieces of fabric I had, so I managed to save money and make a little bit of room for more fabric which I promptly filled up recently.

Anyway, that's my lineup! Sorry for babbling! I hope to see everyone there!

Oh goodness, but it has been a long while since I posted a journal update, hasn't it? School has kept me very busy, and even during break I was a bit overwhelmed with things to do. Wig commissions have been going well, but there's still quite a few I have left to get done--and they're all due by May!

First off, I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who has favourited my photos and started watching me! I've fallen out of the habit of personally thanking people, and I have one too many notifications to do that with so much going on. So I just wanted you all to know how much I appreciate all the watches and favourites. You are all so fantastic and your support means so much to me.

I never did get around to talking about SuperMegaFest, did I? Honestly, it was an all right convention, but nothing to rave about as far as the con experience goes. However, I was super excited to meet Tom Felton and Eliza Dushku (Faith from Buffy). I also got interviewed by Nerd Caliber while dressed as Luna Lovegood, which was too exciting! I was a bit nervous being interviewed so unexpectedly, but it was a great experience! I don't expect I'll be going back to SuperMegaFest next year, but it was still a nice way to wrap up last year's con season.

With that being said, the main reason for this update is this year's con season! The conventions I plan on attending are fast approaching, and though I have considerably less sewing to do for animeBoston this year, I still have a lot of work to get done and all while balancing school work and wig commissions! This year, I only have three conventions officially planned due to finances and timing, however, I may tack on a fourth if there's time and money to do so. Currently, my convention season spans March through May, with animeBoston in March; PAXEast in April; and then finally Fanime at the end of May which my friend, Faxen will be joining me for, along with my usual group of friends from the west coast. PAX will be my one new convention this year, however, I was only able to get a one day ticket as the full weekend badges sold out quickly; so you can expect me there Saturday debuting my first video game cosplay!

Since animeBoston is my first convention, that'll be my focus for the next month or so. You can follow my cosplay Tumblr, my fan page, or even my instagram for progress photo updates! With mostly prop and makeup work to worry about for aB, I've been jumping around on the costumes I work on for myself, but now that it's the middle of February, I'll be focusing more firmly on aB costumes. One of my costumes that I'll be wearing to animeBoston is actually a re-wear with a twist; I'm a part of a huge group for that and I am so excited! Of course, I'm not announcing anything this early, so you'll just have to stay tuned for my cosplay lineup! :D

Apart from con season, wig commissions are definitely keeping me busy and currently there are no openings. Depending on things, I may reopen commissions in June after I get back from Fanime, but I have to take summer classes as part of the program I'm in, so I can't promise anything. And come next school year, I'll be focusing less on cosplay and more on school as it will be my last year. I'll still be attending cons, I'll just be making fewer new costumes. School has to take priority, and besides, I'll still be doing lots of sewing since that's what I'm in school for!

Well, I can't think of anything else to add right now, but I'll be posting my aB lineup the week of the convention--and after that it'll be nonstop for three whole months! It's gonna be an intense con season, but I'm way too excited! I hope everyone enjoys the costumes I produce this year! Thank you again for all your support!
